The protests began after the government blocked platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and X, citing non-compliance with new registration rules. This sparked widespread anger, especially among the youth, who saw it as an attack on digital freedom.

As demonstrations turned violent, police opened fire on protesters, resulting in at least 19 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Curfews were imposed across Kathmandu and other cities, but protesters defied them—storming the PM’s office and setting fire to the homes of senior leaders.
Under mounting pressure—including advice from the Army Chief to step down—Oli and his entire cabinet resigned. His departure brings to an end his fourth term in office, which began in July 2024.
